insane vibration in A4

Ok so its this is a pretty general question. My car which i have had for three months now has recently developed (after i had new tires put on) a vibration that is insane. I took the car back to the shop and had them balance them again. this didn't help at all. When i bought the car it had a vibration but not this bad. The tires were also bald on the inside. I have a feeling that the car is out of alignment. Does anyone have any ideas. I have heard many things could be wrong such as drive shaft is unbalanced. The vibration starts at 60 and progessivley gets worse as the speed increases. The rims do not have any dings or dents that I can see. I have also heard that alignment can cause this since my previous tires were worn completely on the inside. My car is also a quattro. Thanxs in advance

Could be a couple of things, I just went through this a month ago. New wheels that are NOT factory wheels need hubcentric rings to center the wheel on the hub, this alone caused me HORRIBLE vibration. They are $10 plastic rings that fit inside your wheel so the wheel is is perfectly centered on the hub, without them you get the vibration if the wheels are not centered. If your old tires were worn on the inside you have negative camber, without a camber kit you can't adjust the camber on our A4's. An alignment definitely needs done and if the tech is good he can at least equalize the left and right camber so they are close to the same. Quattro's like ours usually have the tow set out a bit more than usual so that when you drive they are pulled straight and your tracking will be good. Make sure you tires are balanced by a good shop aswell. most wheels need weightson the back lip and inside the wheel right behind the spokes, don't let them put weights on the front lip of the wheel it will ruin them and looks like CRAP!

If these things don't fix the problem you must have some sort of balance problem like you mentioned. I am willing to bet it's an easy fix. Do all of these things before looking at drive shaft issues. Good luck and let us know how you make out!

ok so let me mention a few more things. The vibration is the worst in my the floor board and seats which means its in the back. There is vibration in the steering wheel but not terriblely. I took the aftermarket wheels off with the new tires and put the original wheels back on with completely bald tires. The vibration was still there althought not quite as bad. I have heard another theory that suggests that wheel locks can cause a vibration. My car came with all the lugs having locks. If that makes sense.
I think i def. need an alignment but i don't think that this is what is causing the vibrations.

ok so i took my car to a local mechanic after i decided I couldn't stand it anymore. He put it on the lift and said that the tires themselves were spinning like crazy. He changed the lugs back to the originals for a better balance. That didn't help. He said he checked every joint that could be causing it. He also said that the driveshaft was fine. I stuck as all get out again. Here the crazy part: when i put the original wheels back on the vibration was still there. The vibration become noticable at 45+ and gets the worst when I'm going downhill. Does anyone know if the quattro could have something to do with this?

Ok so it looks like its time for an update. I finally after spending well over 600 dollars decided to take it to Audi. I was tired of messing with the thing. Audi in 5 mins. told me what was wrong. They told me I had an out of round tire. This goes to show that the two other tire shops weren't doing their job or using really old balancing technology. So the tire shop that I had bought the tires from gave me a free set. I haven't had them installed yet due to other issues with my car (my car has decided it would like to live at audi). I will give another update shortly.

I had the same issue last week!! Took my car to the dealer, except mine shakes at 80 mph. Dealer took the wheels off, checked the alignment, and balance! They found that my Wheels were bent! Three out of the 4 wheels. They are aftermarket! I asked if this is a danger issue and the assured me that its not a threat to my safty, but in fact you DO HAVE BENT RIMS! Good luck!

any solution?

Horsecrazy - have you resolved this issue? If so, what was the end result?

I have an 02 Allroad with similar issues - mine shakes between 50 and 60 mph. I've had balancing & alignment done multiple times at different shops including dealer.

Most recently it spent three days at a very respected Audi/VW shop where they re-checked everything and finally replaced the front axles and CV joints. Still doing the same thing.

Anyone else want to weigh in on this?
