Were it not for Geneva, Volkswagen
would have a compelling case to set up a booth in Scotland. After all, it is the birthplace of golf.
Horrible puns aside, the massive German automaker is bringing a smorgasbord of Golf variants to the 2013 Geneva Motor Show this year. The 2015 GTI is the latest to be unveiled ahead of the actual event.
The car is based on the same MQB modular architecture as is shared in the lesser Golf and the Audi A3. That will help it to lose roughly 56 lbs over the current model.
Predictably, the production car looks almost identical to the “design concept” shown last September in Paris.
Of course, the car has a more aggressive body kit, lower sport-tuned suspension, a spoiler, smoked taillights, red brake calipers, a dual exhaust, special accents and 17-inch alloy wheels. The interior is trimmed with GTI badges, “Clark” tartan pattern cloth trimmed seats, steel pedals, a sport steering wheel and more.
Apart from the mouthful of modifications visible from the outside, the car is also more powerful.
It’s 2.0-liter direct-injected turbo four-cylinder engine now makes 220 hp and 258 lb-ft or torque — 20 hp and 51 lb-ft more than the car you can buy now. An optional performance package will also boost that figure to 230 hp. It’s an important performance boost with cars like the Focus ST jockeying to roost in the hot hatch segment assuming the U.S. version is as powerful.
Just as the concept had last year, there will be both a six-speed manual and six-speed dual clutch automatic and VW says the car will run from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.5 seconds. That figure is also said to drop to 6.4 seconds with the performance package.
The car also comes with a new stop/start system to help save fuel, although EPA figures aren’t available yet. On the European cycle, the car gets a combined 39.2 mpg with the manual.
German buyers will be able to take one home from showrooms in May, but North American delivery won’t happen until later this year, which means EPA estimates should be available soon.
