I have a new B6 1.8T quattro and the manual talks about a rear fog light. At the left and above the rear numberplate, there is a single light which shines on the numberplate. There appears to be the equivalent light on the right of the numberplate but doesn't light up.

Is one of these the rear fog light?
Are both lights meant to light up to illuminate the numberplate?

The car has auto lights. I have tried turning on the rear fog light manually and the light to the left of the numberplate is the only light that comes on. It is also on when the headlights are on.

nothings wrong... the light to the left of your plate is the rear fog light .. and is the only light that should light up when you activate the rear fog. in very dense fog, the rear fog light provides a bit of added visibility, but it can be very confusing when it is on if there is no fog.. so only use it if you need to

That would be counterproductive (as well as highly illegal); the premise behind the rear fog-light is that only the "inside" rear fog-light should be illuminated, thereby marking the inside corner of the car ahead of you in the fog. Both rear fog-lights would be meaningless, looking like your brake-lights were stuck-on.
