Hi i have a 2002 passat 1.9 tdi
it was off the road for 2 months owing to illness when i came to dirve it i found the foot well in the off side rear soaking wet
any ideas where it has come from
also 1st gear and reverse is very difficult to engage
any help or advise would be much welcome

There are a few places where the water can enter.

1)Your heater core is leaking and seeping coolant into the passenger footwell, soaking the transmission computer underneath which screws up the shifting and you may need a new TCM(expensive).

2)Your sunroof and battery drains are clogged and are leaking water inthe cabin(easy solutions).

3)Your fresh air filter housing is cracked and needs to be fixed or new gasket needs to be applied.

In my case it was 1) the worst case scenario.. check if you are losing coolant, if not then it's most likely your sunroof/battery drains..do a search on PassatWorld.com there are plenty of write ups..After you fix the issues pull the carpet and take the TCM out and blow dry it really well, you may get lucky and not need a new one..

Thanks for that its not loosing coolent but when i checked the battery box the cover was missing off the fresh air filter probably from last service
do you think the stiff gears are off standing for so long ?

I got 2" of water in the back when the evaporator tube from the compressor got plugged with 'debris'. I had the defrost on for a 3 hr. trip, (which runs the compressor), on a muggy, rainy day. Instead of the evaporation running down the tube and on the road, it ran through the air ducts and filled the rear floor, and also drowned the transmition computer. Luckily I was able to get it warrenteed.

so how can i fix it if it is.... what tube... where are all of them located??? how can i fix it:confused:

I don't really know where the evaporator tube is exactly. The VW dealer did the repair. What I do know is that the tube should run off the compressor or one the air conditioning conponents and drain down below the engine somewhere. If you can get under your car with a light, look for a tube or hose with an open end. (There may be more than one.) If you can find it, try to follow it to see what it comes off of and check it for clogs.

Or call a VW shop. Tell them what's going on. You may have a whole other issue. But they should be able to tell you exactly what to look for.

When my wife comes back with the passat tommorow, I'll see If I can find it.

You cannot afford to flood the battery compartment, the windscreen motor is in there and the Engine Management, so take out the battery, and below it is a rubber grommet with a drain tube in it. Take it right out so there is a bloody great hole so it cannot be blocked by leaves and other rubbish. Road dust might get in but that it preferable to a major disaster when water gets past the seals and into the Engine Management Computer system. That WILL spoil your day.
It happened to me, but the seals held on the ECM, but it cost a Wiper Motor and the alarm sounded half drowned for the rest of the summer. Various intermittent ECM faults showed up for the next week or three (i.e. Fault Code 17655 - Stroke Sensor Nozzle Needle - G80) but eventually full power came back. Sometimes disconnecting the battery for a few minutes (or a few hours) will reset spurious faults, particuarily after a nearby lightening strike. = regards = Supersparks +
p.s. Maybe there should be a Service Bulletin to check the battery compartment every time the bonnet/hood is raised and if water is present then remove the grommet. It is not an easy job to lift the battery because various bits of trim have to be moved, but if the battery is changed - then take out the drain grommet. = Would be nice to hear VW comments on this = Supersparks +
