I've owned 1 Audi in my life ( a 95 Audi 80, which I had in France), which was the best car I ever had. Now I'm driving an 01 Jetta, and want to move up to an A4. ANy advantages to older or newer (I think I can only afford used)?
Also, some of the VW engines now use extreme amounts of oil (the 2.0 L 4-cyl uses about a quart every 1000 miles). Are there any oil use problems with Audis?

Welcome to audi-formus.com!

well, VW and Audi engines are exactly the same, so a 2.0 audi engine (not available in the US) will drink as much oil as your VW engine. I have a Jetta VR6 and its oil consumption seems fine. Same with my allroad (2.7t)

I would suggest looking in to a 2001-2002 model A4. If you're planning on modding your car, look into the 1.8t because it has many more affordable modding options. If you're looking for a daily driver with out modding anything on the car, check out the 2.8 V6. Both cars get around the same fuel economy so that isnt really a consideration. If you can find one with the sport package, you'll be happier with the stiffer suspension.

I would suggest getting a 5 speed. The tiptronic auto trans is okay in drive, but drop it over to manual and its rather disapointing. If you just plan on leaving it in drive all the time, dont worry.

If you can.. look into an S4. You can get a used one for just under $20k.

Good luck, keep us posted. ;)

The 2 Liter was known to use lots of oil, I have a 2003 Jetta, just got another 2001 A4.

I agree with bhb399mm, go with a 1.8t if you want to mod. There are some small differences between the model years of the B5 chassis. So find out what is important to you and what you can afford, then go from there. It took me 4 years to get/find the Audi I wanted.
