My 1999 A6 2.8 has about 90k miles on it. I purchased the car when it had 60k miles on it. I am unsure if the timing belt/water pump has been replaced so it is certainly something I want to get changed. I have general mechanical knowledge and am wondering how involved this process is. Has anyone done this on their own and what is the process? Is this something that I can get done in my garage with the help of a mechanic friend or should I take it to a Audi specialist? I don't mind putting the hours into it, but I just don't want to get in over my head. Thanks

I just talked to an Audi shop that can do the entire job for $750 max. Sounds like a pretty good deal, but I still wonder if its something I can get done myself.

It's a pretty big job. I got my A4 done for about $700 all in (water pump) by an independent Audi specialist. I recall the mechanic talking about it taking 6-8 hours (and he does these often).
Good luck.
