SOme of the VW engines use too much oil (1 quart/1000 miles). Do any of the A4 engines suffer from this?

i had a 2.8 a4 that would go from max to min in the space of 5 months and about 3000 miles. the garage could never find anything wrong.

some of the older (1999-2000) A4s with the 1.8t have that problem... but its not as wide spread at the V-Dubs. Are you thinking about an A4? B)

It is normal for engines to burn oil. What you want to worry about is a change in how much it burns. If you bought one new and it always burned 1/2 liter every 5,000 miles and then it started burning 1 liter. Look into it. I have had 3 VW and 1 Audi, but no REAL oil burning issues.

My 2.4 2002 A4 has burned the grand total of 7 gallons of oil so far (33000 miles)
Audi say this is fine! They dont pay for the oil of course.
My last 2.4 was bad but this is worse. I think it is mainly a V6 problem but the same unit is going into the new A6.

My 1995 A4 2.6 Quattro, 203000mls, has an oil (Unipart Brand10W/40 semi synthetic) & filter (Unipart brand) change every 4000mls & uses approx 1/3 litre between changes.
