Yeah, Audi has some good cars, although a lot really lag in torque including most of the RS models. They’ll post something like 450 HP!! But then it only has 290 lb ft of torque and that’s only available at 3900 RPM. That’s like 1990’s turbocharger technology. Everyone else, even Hyundai, has figured out how to eliminate most torque lag. Result is higher torque that kicks in much lower in rpm band. Maybe not Hyundai. But base bmw 340: 335 hp, 330 torque at about 1500 rpm. No turbo lag.
I think Audi is addressing this in its newest models. Read about the new SQ5. They ditched the supercharger and installed turbocharger (not an engineer, maybe turbo setup is lighter. Turbo uses forced induction of what would be exhaust gas, while supercharger uses fresh incoming air). In any case, they boosted power up to ~355 HP & 370 lb ft torque available at low end (think it was 1400 rpm’s). I know that the RS models 4/5/7 all had torque deficits and may still do. Heard Audi is releasing new 2019 RS-5 with just short of 450 HP but much less torque. However, maybe that’s ok. How much do you really need unless your a pro racer....
You raise an interesting point. The “horsepower” wars, esp btw MB & BMW are out of control. When Benz released the AMG 6.3 liter engine that put out 550+ HP they really lit the fuse. They could have kept it just for their S and SL top end models, but they put in their BMW 5 competitor E series plus there former entry class C series. I had a 2002 M5 with 400 HP that was very smooth, body was not overkill like most of the M and AMG cars are now with huge fenders, air intakes, etc. The M5 model after mine had a v-10 making 500 hp, though not a lot more torque; but it’s replacement (F10), came out with base 560/500 with option to kick it up to 575. The F10 was retired end of 2017, and new model released/will be released for 2019 with at least 600 HP, 0-60 in low 3 second range. When will it end?
Excellent but irrelevant point. The something like 450 HP!! But then it only has 290 lb ft of torque and that’s only available at 3900 RPM. That’s like 1990’s turbocharger technology. Everyone else, even Hyunda. And because of that&fusebox burnt #10 to replace dash pixels which were recurring problem on that model and across VW empire. That’s like 1990’s turbocharger technology. Everyone else, even Hyunda. And because of that&fusebox&That’s like 1990’s turbocharger technology. Everyone else, even Hyunda. And because of that&fusebox . yet Audi interiors are unquestionably better than rival BMW. Audi vs MB interiors? Close call. Matter of taste and preference mostly. Each tend to have fine materials and workmanship. Different people have their preferences, but both car companies put bmw to shame in this area. No question, you agree?
Yes, definitely. Getting worn out, but we agree on HP war futility and overall on interior rankings. Personally for me, it’s a close call. Rather than 1/2/3, I’ll rank on 10 point scale, 10 being best among the three brands. MB: 10; Audi: 9.5; BMW 7. Take care and again, welcome to the forum.
