For a very good friend of me who owens a audi 80 AUTOMATIC 1994 enginecode=ABK 1984cc 85 KW i need to know the position of the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This is as fault reported by a diagnostic program. I tried to reset the fault but even without starting the engine the fault comes directly back. I understand by reading some forums it is sometimes a ghost fault. Can someone please advise me what to do or tell me te places of the sensor so i can try to do some measurments or a replacement. Sorry for my English. John from Holland.

i looked up the fault for you and it has no g28 sensor, instead it uses the hall sensor g40 for engine speed signal which is on the ignition distributor, if the engine is not running when you run the diagnostic this fault will come up so try running diagnostics with the engine running and see if fault is still there, from what i have read before the engine will not run if the sensor is broken. i own a 80 abk 1992 and on the side of my distributor there is a wiring connection and this is for the hall sensor g40.

It gets a little bit more complicated. I think found out there was a modification. I found a hole and some screwthreat where the old sensor was lokated i think. Someone has put a new distributor in it with i think the sensor in it. De hole on the left side of the engine is empty now. There is also modification to the wires. Standing open for suggestions. John. The problem is still there. When the engine is running there is not faultcode but it runs no good.

from what you are saying i dont think the sensor is a problem. can you take a picture to show what you are talking about.
The engine running badly could be lots of things. what else have you checked? if you explain how engine is running badly it may help people give you advice.

audi80 automatic engine problem

obd check done with VCDS 10.6.3 and the conversioncable to OBD 1
With the engine not running there was 1 fault "engine speed sensor" Reset and it came back. Later with the engine running after i found this way of cheking on the internet there was not a single fault anymore. But the problem is still there. Engine is not running good. Seems if a check the sparkplugs to rich. They are black. The car uses also to much fuel. Replaced already before a take a look at it the complete distributor, the labda sonde, sparkplugs and they had already put in a used intake system. Thank you for your reaction. Sorry for my bad English. John from The Hague, Holland

rich fuel as you probably know could be lots of things, the diagnostics are not very advanced on these so dont show much.
could be high fuel pressure, bad injectors(15-17ohms bosch 13.5-15.5 seimems)dirty injectors ,dirty air filter, blocked cat, engine temp sensor(blue two pin, common problem),timing, bad dist. cap, rotor arm, leads, leaking exhaust, bad ecu relay(number 30 under dash relay board). lots of stuff. my 80 is also running badly on tick over but i am stuck. thinking of changing rocker cover gasket, manifold intake gasket, and lambda. as everything is getting old its become a money pit. dont think the engine sensor has anything to do with your poblem, but not an expert. so anymore advice from anyone might help.

hi john. you said that the intake system has been replaced, did the throttle valve potentiometer get changed, i am not an expert but i believe that if this is removed or replaced it has to be matched to the engine ecu and gearbox ecu with the diagnostic software(basic setting). Maybe someone with more knowledge can tell you more.
