I was wondering if you guys thought the A4 would be a good first car.

I have around 10K saved up for a car, and I have searched many options. I was wondering if I could get some questions answered.

Insurance: how is it for this car?

Reliablility: Anything I should be woried about?

Gas efficiency: how is it on these cars? i was thinking of 3000gt vr4/300zx but with the arising gas prices, i want something thats a little easier on the gas

Modablility: suspension, induction, sound system etc? easy to mod?

the a4 is turbo charged correct? can i just drop in a BOV?

Power: are there any other audis with maybe a bigger engine that puts out more power?

Thanks.

first off.. the A4s you'd be looking at would either be a 1.8t 4 or a 2.8 V6....

the 1.8t A4s are very easy to mod. Both the 2.8 and the 1.8t are used in VWs aswell, but the 1.8t is a much more “tuner oriented” car. You can search this forum or a VW forum (jetta/golf) for more info on tuning the car. theres tons of info out there.

audis and vws dont use blow off valves... they use diverter valves. BOVs shoot the excess air back into the atmosphere while diverter valves keep the excess air in the induction system. you can get aftermarket diverter valves just as you would get an aftermarket BOV.

there are 3 engines in the A4s you'll be looking at: 1.8t, 2.8 and 2.7t. the 2.7t is a 250hp twin turbo v6 (S4) which is much more powerful than the other two A4s. if you can find one for under $10000 let me know ;)

reliability....is not that good...sometimes. but thats just for some cars. I personally havent had any problems with mine. but other people have. just when you are looking for audis. make sure they have their repair/service records.

for 10, i found my 97 1.8t for about 9ish, with 79k on the clock. you can probably find a 97-99, it really depends on the milage.

the gas, the 1.8t is better than the 2.8. i get about 25ish mpg, and thast with a Led foot :D i believe the 2.8s get about 19ish...correct me if im wrong.

the 1.8t (just like what bhb399mm said) are very easy to mod. (i.e. a GIAC chip is 450$, and it give you 45ish HP for the 1.8t) if you get a chip for the 2.8, you will get mabie 10hp...because its a NA car. Turbo cars have allot more potential.

also, no BOV for audis, when it lets go of the boost buildup, the ECU thinks their is a leak....

the only mods for the 2.8 really are...

-chip
-exhaust
-intake
-supercharger
-suspension
-short shifter

as for the 1.8t you have...

-chip
-exhaust
-turbo upgrade (i.e. K04, T-28...ect.)
-intake (some people debate if the stock one is best)
-suspension
-short shifter
-Test pipe
and many more...

As for sound systems...man-o-man i have seen some SICK setups. it all really depends on the ammount of "mulah" you have! :)

cheers

sorry to kind of take over thsi topic, but it seems like its inactive and i dont want to start another :) i have the same question though but id probably be spending in the 6-10k range and you all never really answered the insurance and all that. i can get my parents honda crv but i want a semi sporty car, and the audi is and its still safe. my mom has a 2002 a4 i think it is and i love driving it :) but im just curious on if i should just take the crv and save up until college or mabe talk my rents in to paying for insurance if i buy the car. im more worried that the repairs will be more expensive then anything.

doesnt really help out. idk where you can get $1.69 for gas. $1.90 is a steal where i am and thats for regular, supreme or whatever you want to call it is atleast $2. but how much do you think insurance would be for an a4 compared to a '96 crv?
