Very, very common problem. It seems that after some time, everybody will have it. It is related to heat, when it is getting warm behind the instrument panel, the display will fade. It's probably the LCD connection to the mainboard, when it heats up it provides poor electric connection. I've read of people trying to fix the connector, but I don't recall anybody having luck. The only fix is replacing the whole instrument cluster, but it's a matter of time until the new one will do the same.

If you plan to replace the cluster yourself, here's some useful info:

Hi, I'm in the same dashless, immobilized boat. Thanks for the great info, I'll let you know how I get on. The cluster was changed a number of years ago by audi for the previous owner,Ill have to check what year it was done and what kind of cover it came with. Is it a big job to fit a tested 2nd hand cluster and upload my details on to it?

I spoke to Audi UK and quoted the watchdog text and they agreed and said it would be replaced free of charge........if it was a UK car. So I was put in touch with Audi Ireland who obviously know nothing about this and are fairly sure that no clusters have been replaced free of charge!!!! Correct me if Im wrong, but surely AUDI are AUDI and if their guages are obviously crap they should pick up the tab, regardless of where we live. I'll keep you posted, but I recommend everyone with this problem contact Audi and the Ombudsman and not let it rest untill AUDI recognise the problem. Its a €40k car not a fiesta, you would expect the dash to last longer than an ice-cream on a hot day!!

I do - thanks Rick! My fuel gauge has been offset by 1/4 to the right, which means it shows I have more fuel than I actually do. I'm taking it to the dealer for this issue, and will bring the watchdog report to coax them into replacing the entire dashpod.

For some odd reason, your link didn't work for me--I had to strip off the "rel='nofollow" ending on the URL.

has anyone from the U.S. been able to replace the dashpod free of charge by their local dealership? I have an '01 which is past the 5-year mark that Watch Dog has indicated that Audi UK said they would replace any faulty dashpods on a case-by-case basis.
