Hi guys, i have just looked at and agreed to buy a A4 1.9TDI Quattro Sport Avant. Mechanically the car seems very good, and too be honest doesn't look like it has done high mileage. The only snag is that it has covered 170,000 miles. It was serviced by Audi until 164,000 and then by a VAG specialist. My question is, is there any thing specific i should be wary of with this high mileage?

My first impressions are that everything feels incredibly tight steering and suspension wise. I know the clutch is likely to be a week spot at these miles, but i couldn't detect and slip. The only mechanical thing i can find is that the front discs are shot.

Any pointers greatly received.

Thanks

Matt

I wouldn't worry a whole lot about the clutch as long as it doesn't seem to grab to high in the pedal travel. In an older Porsche I once owned the original clutch lasted 22 years and 164,000 miles, the friction material had plenty of life left however the center springs went from old age.

I'm sure the suspension, at least control arms, have been replaced at some point if it feels tight. I would also guess that the Turbo has been replaced also, I believe they work a bit harder in the TDI than the gasoline variant.

Once you get it home I'd pour over the hoses too.

Did you look for "milk" underneath the oil cap? Does the car come with any service records?

Hello Matt.
Good choice as I have the same vehicle, to be honest the B6 is the most reliable platform A4 and the 1,9 tdi is a legend of a engine.
Turbo failure is not a common issue with the correct oil changes.
The only areas of concern would be the dual mass flywheel and that's it really.
Check there are no noises on full lock as the alternator pulley clutch can seize
Check the a/c works as the pressure switch is a common failure
Check there are no noises form the quattro prop shaft
Check the windows operate without any gratting noises from the regulators
Check the central locking works
Check the rear wash wipe works as the washer leaks into the motor and seizes the motor
In some severe cases the camshaft lobes wear and also the injectors can fail causing a misfire but if you have access to vag com than run a scan check of all controllers for any hidden fault codes

As mentioned I own a 1.9 tdi a4 avant quattro with 100,000 miles clocked up and I love it.I would not buy the B7 paltform 2.0 tdi as the engine has to many mechanical faults.

Post some pics up when you buy it
