I need some help from an expert. I have a 1997 A6 Avant 2.8 Quattro. The remote locking and the buttons in the car don't work anymore. I ASSUME (?) it may be the central locking pump. I checked all the fuses and are OK.

First where is the darn pump? What is the procedure? I was planning (when I find the pump!) to check to see it is getting power, then see if it is making pressure (or does it make vacume?). Is that a good plan?

Any and all help apreciated!

Thanks, Dave

Not under seat

Despite the fact that all the literature I've seen indicates that the pump (and other important components) is under the back seat, that's not the case for my '95 Avant. I haven't had time to search (I assume I'll just follow a vacuum line coming from a door), but 1) I'm getting tired of locking everything manually, and 2) it's pretty nice out here today, so I might get to it later; I'll let you know.

I was wrong...

I was wrong: I thought I was looking closely, but not closely enough. The central lock module is stuck in a small space on the outboard side of the battery, partially hidden by the carpet, and is encased in sound-proofing foam which also conceals it completely.
I located a blown fuse to the central locking system, in the back/left corner of the engine compartment, in a box that houses mostly relays. I replaced it, but the central locking isn't working; in fact, the module isn't making a sound. However, now when I lock the driver's door with the key, I get a single, quick, relatively quiet "beep" from somewhere near the back of the car. I'm going to search for some troubleshooting procedures: I'll let you know what I find.
