hiya, ive just got a 1996 a3 1.6s with a bit of a heat problem...
firstly, the engine will over-heat after shortish journeys in traffic. i have seen the fan come on but only for about 30seconds and it wasnt going very fast  . also after switching off the engine the fan dosnt come on to cool it down.
it isnt loosing water, so could it be a fan switch or motor thats faulty?

Secondly, the heater only blows out cold air... maybe a blockage?

if anyone has had any of these problems or has any more ideas of what it might be, please let me know so hopefully i can get it sorted!

does the water temp guage read if not you have a faulty water temp sensor that can effect things. also you may have a blockage in the heater matrix in the dash thats where the in car heat comes from. B)

I replaced the thermo fan switch the other day and gave it an hours caning last night with no probs... so fingers crossed! If the over-heating problem persists i'm going to flush the rad through to make sure theres no blockage just to make sure.

Theres still no heat in the cab, but i know someone who should be able to sort it if there is a blockage in the heat ducts.

Will keep everyone posted with any changes!

Hiya, turned out it was a broken water pump that only half worked! the car has been fixed now for just over a month, and is running better than ever... its so nice to have my baby back!
As a treat, ive gone out and got a pipercross panel air filter, magnex exhaust and ecotek cb-26p valve.
Also, ive just sold my old alloys off my escort and have a bit more spare cash so if anyone knows anyone selling any 18" audi wheels, please get in touch!

i think its bedded in now, and the car does feel a little more responsive at lower revs. its really hard to say about fuel consumption as i am guilty of driving it hard at high revs most of the time :innocent: and only really fill up the odd £20 here or there!
The noise it makes is a little strange but it cant really be heard that well if you point the gauze end of the valve away from the cab. (i didnt bother to buy the silencer pipercross make for it).
All in all for £50, about a 5min fitting time i dont regret buying it.
Have a look on their website www.ecotekplc.co.uk
they havnt got any reviews after fitting to a 1.6 a3 but there are some interesting bits on VW's and other audis and is worth having a look at!

P.S awsome photos of your a3! B)
