Been very happy with my 1999 Audi A3 for the past 2 years (mileage 80,00 mniles). Today after returning from a 2 week holiday out of the country my car began to make a strange whurring noise. I called my breakdown service & after an hour of investiagation was informed it could either be a drive shaft probem or a gear box problem. I have awaited the feared phone call form the mechanic all afternoon to be told it is a gearbox fault. Has anyone else had such problems with an Audi of a similar age/mileage? Am I extremely unlucky or is this an ongoing wear 7 tear fault for a car of its age?
Any advice/opinion appreciated.

I've just joined the forum to ask the same question. I have a 1998 A3 Turbo Sport with 88K.
Gearbox started to whine in first a few weeks ago and eventually failed on me last night.

I've bought a second hand one for £250
