Hey everyone,

I am reading everywhere that Audis need synthetic oil but I have 95,000 miles on my '97 A4 and have been using valvoline max life or mobil 1 high mileage both oils for high mileage engines. Would it be worth it for me to switch to synthetic for my next oil change or just keep using these high mileage oils?

semi synthetic oil is recommended for the 1.8t and 95000 miles is really just run in to an VAG engine so it wouldnt hurt you to change oils to the manufacturers recommended type .

Attached is the Audi Approved Oil chart. As noted, not all these oils are available in the US, actually looks like most of them aren't.

But you can see the pattern. Also, the recommended oil listed in the owners manual (my '99 1.8T) says either petroleum based or synthetic. However, it seems with the 1.8T motor that all the dealers recommend the synthetic and that's what I use. I consider it cheap insurance for keeping the motor clean (as well as changing it at recommended intervals).
