I Have a 1998 Audi a4 1.8t quatro. The engine cranks and runs rought. Cant drive the car or cant accelerate past 1 thousand rpm, because the engine almost shuts of. If I gas the car and get it to higher rpm it back fires.

You would be best to get the car plugged in to VAG-COM which should give you a fault code on the problem...

The car starts fine. I bought the car with this problem. It wont go past 1.5 rpms, something kills the car back to like 600 rpms, When its cold it idles little low, but when it heats up it idles fine. Whats the icm?
Could the oxygen sensor be bad?

I had a similar problem to you - it was the oxygen sensor and it only needed cleaning and has never failed since - some of the sensors on Audi's can get dirty/damp and really give the engine a hard time, but as i say, one i'd had it cleaned hey presto!

You can buy a new oxygen sensor pretty cheap !! rather than try to clean it up as i here they are quite a common problem like the coil packs we use too on the 1.8T ..
