Check Engine Light

I have '95 Audi Cabriolet. I live in Cleveland where we have E Check (Emissions Check) semi-yearly. My mechanic told me almost 2 years ago the light goes on because of a restriction in a breather tube and it really is not needed to clean (cost $450) it until the inspection. The light comes on when engine heats up, in about 20 minutes and will go off and on the rest of trip. Does this sound correct? Also how long do I need to have battery disconnected to have the memory reset so I can pass the test? Thanks, Pete

Thanks, No converter is OK, mechanic pointed to a tube on top of engine that just needs to be taken off and the (maybe) carbon cleaned from inside. If I remember correctly a 3/8 bent tubing that is a bear ($450) to remove, clean reinstall. Pete
