Welcome to the forum and I hope you can get what you looking for out of it.
This is not a new question, check out some fairly recent threads and you will see that there are some niggles with the TT, some more common than others and one or two that are pretty serious. Decide from there.

Well let me answer you last question first. Will it be costly? If you can not do any repairs yourself the answer is YES besides parts your Audi and independant repair stations are very exspensive on labor. If you can do a lot of your own repairs I'd say cost is with in reason. Shop around for parts pricing and you can save a lot by NOT buying from the Audi dealers. Example. Yesterday I needed a new diverter valve. Called my local Audi dealer to price a OEM Bosh D/V. $85! Called a few other shops around town and found the same Bosh part # for $35.00 plus tax. Huge difference if you shop around. And of course I through the D/V on myself so no labor charges. Had I gone to the Audi dealer would have been near $200! plus waiting around or leaving my car there for a day.

I've got a 01 TT with a 5 speed & quattro and I beat on my tranny pretty hard. So far to date I've not had any tranny problems. Clutch has held up nicely. Now understand I've only had my TT for about 2 months now but so far so good. I have not experienced any of the electrical quirks that some people have reported. In fact I'm very impressed with the cars fit and finish. I've got no rattles or squeaks that bother me. If your intent is to just "drive" the car as a daily get to work and go out on the weekend kind of car you'll probable be happy.

We have an '01 TT quattro coupe and it has been great. We had some trouble with the sending units in the fuel tank but nothing else. It is mainly driven by my wife as a daily driver and she is not an aggressive driver. Nonetheless, the car has been great.

However, from reading, I think if I were looking at a car of that age now, I think you want to find out about the timing belt/chain. I hear they can cause some serious damage if they break and while they aren't cheap to replace the money is well spent especially if you tend to utilize the car's performance abilities....if you follow me.

Other than that, I haven't heard of much in the way of chronic problems with the cars.

Good luck with your search.
