I have a 1998 A6 2.7 Quattro. Best car I've ever owned. 125K and still drives like new (well... almost). When the engine reaches operating temperature, the right (passenger) side of the engine starts to smoke. Limited online research seems to indicate some sort of gasket failure (cam adjuster, tensioner or value cover get the most "guilty" votes).

It appears to me that previously leaked oil has collected on the engine and becomes thinner as the temp goes up - it then drips onto the exhaust manifold and, presto, smoke is created.

I have not detected any loss of power (aka compression?) so I am hoping it's not a major problem........ I'm fairly mechanical.......

Any advice would be appreciated. I am also looking for a mechanic in the Northern NJ area.
