have a 1995 jetta (ABA 2.0L engine) that was rebuilt, have approx. 1000 miles on it, problem is that i have black soot coming out of exhaust pipe, the question i have is:
1. how many miles does it take to seat rings?
2. could it be it is running to rich? (has fuel injection motronic)
3. could it be the pcv valve and system?
any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

If the exhuast was laying around for some months the skin of layed on soot is now being burnt off or just falling off with the expansion of the metal.
1 - Rings - don't let the engine labour - keep the revs up over 2500. About 15 miles of continuous 2500 rpm + driving.
2 - too rich is usually black smoke or and white with diesel.
3 - could be oil being burnt from the crankcase - usually has blue colour.
