today my '88 audi 90 did something that puzzled me. The car seemed fine, and when you would start to drive away it would move fine, but once your going it would like stutter to the point where it seems like the engine cuts out one second, and comes back the next, jerking the entire car back and fourth..... i'm starting to wonder if the distributor cap rotor and coil may be bad, and it is not firing right...

specs: 1988 audi 90.... 5cyl 2.3L.... 5 speed..... 120,000 miles

I experienced similar symptoms on a VW Passat on which the throttle closed sensor was intermittent. This tells the ECU when the throttle is closed such that if the throttle is closed and the revs are above something like 1500 rpm then the fuel is cut completely. Thus if the sensor falsely tells the ECU that the throttle is closed when the engine is above 1500 rpm (as it would be if you were driving normally) you get this awful kangerooing as the fuel is chopped and then reinstated. I think that the Audis have a switch on the throttle spindle, my first check would be of this switch.

Hope this helps

Keith
