Hi, I'm thinking about buying a 1988 "80" for £500. I've had a look at it, and it seems fairly sound body-wise. However, I am completely in the dark about mechanical gremlins they may suffer from. I can generally tell the wooden end of a spanner from the heavy end, which may help... How reliable are they, and what in particular should I look at when buying, how dear are parts?

Any response would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Chris

Ive got an 80 of about the same age, had it about 12 years now, as you say good bodywork etc, can sometimes have minor electrical issues.

Very reliable to be honest, not much needs doing but if something goes wrong it could cost alot, cars of this age can just get nasty problems without any warning.
(My head gasket went 6 months ago cost a few bob to replace)

A few minor problems but nothing you wouldnt get on any car of the same age, electics, seals etc.
Basically all the seals are perishing a little with age/wear etc and sometimes in very heavy rain ive had the lights cut out. I just accepted it cos of the age again.

I just topped 194,000 and am very happy with the car, i would definately recommend one to you.
