Audi 100 Avant 1986 Big Probs

Hello all. Desperately seeking some good advice on a nagging problem with my Audi. Starts always without problems. After perhaps 5 kms the engine starts "hopping" and choking and progressively I lose response at the peddle. Sometimes I can drop the gear and hit the gas to get a marked response, but if I slow down the engine does not respond again. Usually little black smoke and always very rich exhaust. In most cases, the car comes to a standstill and is unable to be recovered, and finally "dies". I must wait around 5 minutes before starting the car again, at which time is tough to get going, and usually works by pumping furiously on the gas, or simply dropping it to the floor. Once up and running again the engine responds normally, but the same problem can occur again after a while. Seems to always occur on or during a slow, long and mild uphill section.

I seek advice because I have now taken the car to three (3) alternative mechanics, and have not even received good advice about where the problem lies. They simply do not know until the car breaks down for once and for all. In the meanwhile I am forking out money for servicing and in the end not getting a solution.

I live in a very cold part of mid-north Sweden, where winter temperatures can fall to minus 20. The climate here is fairly dry. I have had a motor warmer fitted in order to hold the temperature even, but this problem started to occur well beforehand, and during the summer here would occur particularly when the humidity was high.

Any idea and advice? If I can just get a start point in where to look I have a better chance than I do now.

Hello

I too had a problem with an Audi 100 1994 where power was lost completely and the engine stalled. After approximately 10 minutes it would start again and run normally. The problem could be overcome some of the time by flooring the accelerator.

In the end the fault was put down to the hall sensor in the distributor. Dealer part only I am afraid!

Yep sounds pretty familiar. At the moment we have very cold temps down to about minus 20 and we have been using the motorwarmer, and although I can feel the problem lying there in the background, at least the car gets us to work of a morning! By that I mean that I can still feel it starting to cough a little after a short while. Do you know more about this hall sensor and distributor...your talking to someone who has a good understanding of what a car is all about...but none of the technical terms or jargon involved.

Hi! I too have an Audio 100 Avant 1986.
With similar problem. It has happened three of four times the last couple of years.

Twice when it was very hot outside, humidity high. The engine just dies and does not want to start. We waited half a day, then it started like nothing ever happened!

Then at Winter 2 years ago, I had to drive with choke on all the time, else it would stall when I idled the throttle.
That problem was the vacuum-"hose" that was cracked and leaked. When that thing was replaced, like $30 for work etc it worked allright again!

But now, and today, the car started to go unsmooth, I thought it was my bad balanced wheels, but just as I went uphill and in a right corner the engine just died.

Just when the car stopped a "new" warning sound I have never heard before sounded.
A high-pitched beep.

Got a friend to tow me and I tried putting 3rd or 4th gear in to start. Lights went on, everything looked good. As soon as I put neutral in, that warning sound again for 1 or 2 seconds, then engine died. I think the oil warning lamp is the first to light as the sound comes, then the usual battery etc lamps start to blink.

The car now is in a sunny parking lot, and I'll try to start it after a few hours.

Just one week ago I had the oil changed on it, do you think that might be a part of the problem? Like if a sensor has been broken or oil levels are even out and the sensor needs more oil?

Is there a warningsystem in such an old Audi that prevents engine to start if some level or some system is faulty?

How did you fix your Audi, Ostrich?
By the way, I live in Sweden too.
