I may be a little late for this decision but anyway...
I just picked up an 01 A6 Q 4.2 with the sport package (~60K miles) and love it.
I would strongly advise getting a bumper to bumper extended warranty as these cars seems rather expensive to fix. Do your homework and look for the right car. I went through 4 before I found one that only had some minor cosmetic problems. If your looking for anything other than the 4.2L take a close look at the front brake components. Other than that I say go for it.
