My Sept 2000 A6 2.4SE auto saloon is making some strange noises when I pull away at low speed and with the steering on left or right lock.
The noise is like a ticking/clicking sound that speeds up as the car accelerates and then disappears under engine noise as you drive off.
It sounds like it's coming from the steering column or a CV joint, perhaps the power steering mechanism but I can't be sure.

Anyone have any ideas where I should start?

sounds like it could be the cv joint as mine did the same on full lock when i reversed.

Perhaps your axle boot is ripped and is hitting an object as it's turning.

Anyone out there have some ideas?? I'm experiencing the exact same thing in my '99 A6 Avant. The tie-rods have been replaced recently although I doubt that's got anything to do with it and my cv boots are in good shape.

Don,t know if its any use but i had the same problem ,i had the mot done two weeks ago and asked the garage to have a good look for the (clicking)but they found nothing,very "reputable garage"and then they passed it.
