Hey Everyone,

I've been researching Audi's for about a year in advance of buying one and I've finally whittled down my interest/budget to an A4 2.8 manual. I'm in Boston so age is often more important than miles due to the annual weather damage in the area, but I'd like to know if there are any particularly better or worse years between '97 and 2000 for the 2.8 A4, and if anyone has any tips at all. The average one I'm looking at is around 75-100k miles, good to excellent condition, timing belt replaced, dealer maintained, leather/power/wood interior. I'd prefer the sport suspension but it seems like aside from cosmetics (wheels/ steering wheel) that's only a 30mm drop and tires that will long since have been swapped so there ain't much performance enhancement.

Anyone got any advice? I also have the more difficult but possible option of finding a slightly cheaper one in northern CA and having a friend grab it and ship it out to me. I'll have to adjust what I can pay to accomodate the roughly $1k shipping, the benefit being CA conditions on the car.

All input much appreciated.

:57: Hi,My first day on the forum, just like to tell you a couple of things, about them b4 you buy..Only get from Audi direct, don't let anyone tell you it's certified unless you call Audi yourself, second if you can't afford it there only get it on Ebay..That's your only other safe haven...believe me.These cars are very expensive if you don't have a hook up,and when it's been abused you won't be able to tell by the first couple of days ,it's after extensive driving and then all goes wrong. These cars are best new, unless you don't care how much money you will burn. And also never get one over 75,000 miles or else you looking for trouble..100,000 miles is asking for it,When you go to see it pay and Audi rep,$45.00 to tell you if it's ok they inspect top to bottom.OH and please don't ever buy a 97-or 98 thats worse, mark my words "nothing but drama"listen if you really need to find one email me ..GOOD LUCKKK..

there is nothing wrong with a high milage car aslong as it was taken care of.

what are your plans with this car. if it is going to be an everyday car and not moding it i would look into the 2.8. get the latest model with low milage that you can afford. if you are planing to mod it look into the 1.8t they are highly modable. just remember you might beable to afford the payments but can you afford to fix it.

when looking ask when

timing belt waterpump thermostat belt tensioner was replaced (if it ever was) every 60,000 it should be replaced

control arms? done under recall? will fail eventualy

other than that just random crap will brake just like any car

i live outside boston. dont wory about wether damage it wont realy make that much of a differance.

there are many dealers around boston. if you buy a certified audi it will cost about $3000 more than if you bought it from a non audi dealer.

any other ? just ask
