Hi all,

I'm new to the forum, have owned my 80 since May 2005 and generally it's been excellent. I've had an intermittent starting problem where the engine would turn over but not fire, or not fire properly and cut out, but then 5 mins later start fine. One one occasion I called out RAC and the guy found that if he wiggled the lead into the bottom of the distributor (from the hall sender?) it started. I thought that problem had gone away until it cut out in the outside lane of the M3 on my way back from Legoland! Had to get a tow all the way back to Devon...

Enough about that, the problem now is that there is no spark whatsoever. The breakdown man suspected the coil pack, so I replaced that and also the module but with no success. I am now considering taking the car to a diagnostics specialist but wondered if anyone has any suggestions first. From looking at old posts I have seen others with similar problems and solutions have included to replace the distributor (inc. hall sender), cold start switch, coil module (obviously not that).

This is the key thing for me at the moment, but also I am wondering what mpg I should be getting? Around town/rural lanes I get about 22mpg, this increases to 28mpg on longer trips. Doesn't seem too good but obviously it aint a TDi!!

Look forward to getting some help!

Thanks,
Stu

Problem solved. It was the distributor. Purchased from Audi, approx. £100 inc next day delivery, exchange basis.
