Purchasing a 2007 S8 tomorrow, but one disconcerning item.

Started the engine and this loud audible vibration/rumble (brrrrrrrrrrrr) was clearly heard. Immediatly I opened up the hood, but the engine was not shaking violently, and then the vibration stopped after 25 seconds, and it was whisper quiet.

Is this the early sign of cylinder failure? Carbon build up?

PLEASE HELP!

its the chain tensioners and the chains

they stretch normally right bank drivers side

engine out to replace all the chains and tensioners I'm afraid

intermittent noise from cold crank

I would hope so but due to the cost and labour its unlikely and no doubt you will be fobbed off

If the noise is as described then its unlikely any engine damage will occur as B6 s4's are renowned for the same cold start brief rattle

In some cases changing the oil or oil grade reduces this but I recommend the chains and tensioners as the part number super seed's therefore improved

good luck

Yes, carbon and lots of it.

I have a 2007 that has been in service about 20x in 2.5 yrs. it has now been at the dealership for about 32 days. Check eng light and tons of carbon buildup. This apparently wasnt the only problem this time. The engine is "unfixable". they are replacing the engine now. what is next?
