I am considering purchasing a certified 01 a6 4.2 with 30,000 mi. How is the dependability of this type of vehcle? Will I be disappointed?
you wont be disapointed! the a6 is a great car. the 4.2 is a good engine, but check out the 2.7t. its about 0.2 seconds slower, but can be modified much more than the V8 (if youre interested in that kind of thing.. ) also, the V8 is very thirsty... i'll sacrafice 0.2 seconds from 0-60 for better fuel economy if i'm not planning on modding my car. Hello!

A6 4.2 is a superb car! I would argue 4.2 has better milage than 2.7 bi-turbo!
( my colleague has 2.7 bi-turbo and we have followed this! same distance 1 litre/100km less with 4.2).The V8 engine "sound" is from other world! Honestly ...
I do not know why to choose 2.7 versus 4.2??

i dont agree... the 4.2 does not get as good of gas mialiage as the 2.7t. The descrepency you are seeing may because of driving style. The 4.2 does sound good, but it isn't much faster than the 2.7t. There are also tons more mods you can do to the 2.7t. that you cant do to the 4.2. If fuel isnt a concern, or you dont want to mod your car, then go with the 4.2

the 2.7t and the 4.2 look slightly different. the 4.2 has slightgly bigger wheel fenders which gives it a little better looking stance. the 4.2 has better looking (and bigger, i think) stock wheels. thats about it.

Hey, I am a newB here and I am also considering the 4.2.

From what I ve' read it has also longer front fenders to accomodate the v-8 as well as other gizmos inside such as heated rear seats and side rear air bags...

Well, let me know where you intent to buy and what price range.???

I am looking north of 27, 000$ with no more than 40k miles with premium and snow packages (everything available)... sounds reasonable??

Thanks :D

yeh the 4.2 is maybe an inch longer... when i was in the market for my A6 ((sold)2001, 2.7T,6Speed, Sport Package, APR Chip, etc) there were two deciding factors:

1) The 6 Speed manual trans. - not available in the 4.2
2) The 'mod-ability' of the 2.7T compared to the 4.2

If you're not going to change a thing as far as proformance, and don't care about a manual trans, by all means go for the more sporty 4.2. If you do have plans for modifications, look into a 2.7T.
