Hi, I'm new to this forum, but was hoping that someone out there could help. I have a 2001 A6 2.8 Quattro. It has about 47,000 miles on it. Within the past couple of thousand miles, it has developed a knock from the engine. When it first started, it was at its worst when the engine was cold, but went away after it warmed up. Now it doesn't go away, it just gets quieter as it warms up. I was poking around with my stethescope today, and found that it seemed loudest when I touched it to this thing (some sort of vacuum operated lever) at the front of the intake manifold. The sound is almost like that of a sticking or dry lifter, a rhythmic, metallic knocking. If anyone has any ideas as to what this might be, please let me know. I'm perplexed, but don't want to sell the car just because of this. This has been my 3rd A6, and the best one yet. It has never, not once, been in the shop for anything other than regular maintenance.

Thank you!

Mike
