...because it slipped a timing chain on one side (so the seller says).

It's for sale, so my first question is: If there's internal engine damage as a result of the slipped chain, what kind of cost is involved here? This sounds like a total engine teardown, correct?

Wouldn't it be more cost effective to drop a replacement engine in?

I'm wondering if this is a worthwhile project. If the car was running properly, what would it be worth? 6-8k? If a replacement engine is in the 4k ballpark, then would a purchase price in it's current condition of 3k be a decent deal?

probably worth more in parts than as it is today as a whole.

typical timing belt issues are bent valves, punched out heads, etc...
