Wing mirror casing removal

I have an A4 2.0l 2002,
recently some little scroat decided to snap my drivers side wing mirror. The casing glass etc is undamaged, its just the metal bracket that connects it to the car door thats snapped.
Which leads me onto my question, can you remove the housing i.e the painted part and put it onto another undamaged mirror. The reason i ask is that i've found a second hand complete mirror but it's just in a different colour, so rather than have it resprayed can i just replace the casing?
Any advice on the how to do this if possible would be most welcome and also any advice on the procedure to fit the new mirror would also be welcome.
thanks in advance.
