Brake light switch

Hi All,
A4 2.0TDI Auto B8 2008
3rd brake light warning on dash comes on intermittently on starting and no brake lights working when warning is on, if I stop and start the car a number of times the lights start working and no warnings on the dash, what is the set up for the brake switch, this switch is not the type that you turn to lock in or to remove from the mounting but there is a part of the switch (in purple)on the end that rotates, can anyone help, Please see photo attached.
