Thanks A8 Tech for that run down of what to look for, it will be very helpful when going to look at 1.8T's. Should be on the forum often if i can find a good A4, thanks Rep added!!

Oil light came on ours today. Level was fine, assumed it was a faulty sensor til I started looking around online and found this thread and other info.

Hi, I'm very keen on getting this precaution job taken care of on my 2004 A4 1.8T Cab, which I've owned since it was almost new (it only had 9,000miles on the clock when i picked it up). I've only ever used Castrol Syntec SAE5-40, as recommended and always done the oil changes on time.

Audi will charge me $125 per hr, so I'd probably be just shy of a grand... Or I could take it to a different mechanic for 1/2 the price and just hope they do a proper job?

Thing is I do not have the tools nor the experience to drop a subframe.. As much as I'd love to carry out this job myself, I'd probably make a right mess of things at best, or at worse kill myself as the 'sub frame' drops on me while I'm under it !!

So and this is aimed at any competent audi mechanic.. Would you say any competent mechanic could carry out this job? Or should I strictly leave it only for Audi to meddle, as they may miss certain little techinques that'll only come back and bite me on the ass a few months down the road.

Advice appreciated.

Ours went away after a couple of days until today when we took a long trip. After about 200 miles it came on and went in and out a few times. It started after I ran it up to about 100 mph engaging the turbo. Mine is stock with no boost gauge but I'm sure it was close to full boost. On the way back it started doing it again after about 200 miles or so. At first, it would go away when I let of the gas but then stayed on constantly after about 50 more miles. No funny noises or odors though. I let it cool down about 30 minutes when we got back and then went to the grocery store. The light didn't come on while on the way there. On the way back, I got on it a little and then it came on. It was about a mile trip each way. I checked for the blue smoke, the hard breather tube, the oil cap being tight while running, and buildup under the cap. All were ok.

I am new to the Audi world so please excuse any stupid questions. I found a 2003 A4 1.8T for sale in NC at a good price. So as with every car I buy I google searched it... And now im here.

My question to all of you! Should I steer away from the 1.8T? The seller states he has owned the car since new and all scheduled maintenance has been accomplished by Audi with receipts. I asked him about this issue and he said he has had no problems and Audi recalled all the cars to have them inspected and repaired. He also said the cars were shipped from the factory with non-synthetic oil and that was the cause of the problem.

So, should I just find an Audi with a 3.0? If I do buy this car can I expect it to have this issue even if I use the correct oil and change it on time? It has 77,000 miles on it now. Will it last for 77,000 more?

Please be honest, as stated...I really like the Audi line and am going to buy one. I just want to buy the right one.
