Q5 Aftermarket Trailer and Lighting
I needed a hitch for my 2011 Q5 and was not up to paying the ~1200 for the dealer install. I purchased Draw-Tight hitch Part Number: 75708, $184
and universal light modulator kit 119176KI, $65. I am planning to use this for a 4 wire trailer connection for a utiltity trailer asnd boat.
I could not finsd a aftermarket wiring harness that had a connector to interface with the factory "pre-wired" connector supplied. There is a lot of discussion on other threads about potental of screcwing up the wiring and having to have the computer reset. The wiring on the q5 is mot easy to figure out. The cars LED lights are located in the rear hatch door. The door has a connector on the rear door latch so the rear lights will not activate unless the door is closed. I was real concerned about finding the splicing into the wiring.
I connected the modulator yesterday with no issues or errors from the computer; No need to re-program. Here is the proceedure:
Remove plastic access panels in rear door directly behind the rear LED lights to access the connector wiring to the light. close the hatch door. crawl into the back. The Q5 is a three light hook up; Stop, Turn, Running Lights. With the rear hatch shut, test the connections on the left hand light. Identify right turn. stop and running lights. Find the right hand turn wire on the right side.
Here are the wires:
Remove the floor access panel inside the trunk to get to the battery. Remove tire and access the battery compartment beneath. Remove the plastic threashold that covers the hatch door lock above the rear bumper (Just pull up, held on with clips, no screws). Remove right side, side access panel to get to the cars wiring harness.
Locate harness that feeds up through the car body . It travels up into the body and goes through the rear door hinge to get to the lighs in the hatch.. Here is where you will find the wires you need to splice. Make slices from the modulator to the wired identified above per the kit instructions.
POWER CONNECTIONAND TRAILER PLUG ROUTING:
Route power cable and trailer connector plug end of the modulater into the battery compartment. Make power connetions to battery. Remove rubber plug that allows access to the ecterior inside the rear bumber. Route trailer connector outide to the interior of the rear bumper. Cut rubber plug half way and reinstall around throght the connetor wir to seal the access hole.
Time estimate is 30 min.
