2000 A8 D2 trip computer display blank

Hello everyone. Can anyone help me solve a fault?

With my A8 D2 2.8 sport over the last few months the trip computer display which shows the radio channel, gear one is in, failure alarms etc started to dispear intermitently and has now disappeared completely. I replaced the control box by the tea cup holder to no avail. In fact the old one looks clean. Does anyone know where the unit that provides the information is situated? Ive been in the ECU and all plugs and sockets are clean and secure. I still get the odd audiable alarm when e.g. the washer bottle is low but no visual display. Any pointers would be appreciated.

I found that the fault was due to the ribbon cable connecting with the display inside the instrument cluster was not making a good connection with the led display. I put some rubber packing inside the led cover and solved the problem for the time being.
