Ive had my Audi A3 MY11 1.8 TFSI for 3 weeks now. Twice it has disengaged gear. First time I was on an incline, hit the brake to let pedestrians pass and when I accelerated, the car rolled backward. Turned the car off and on 4+ times to no avail - even asked someone else to try. After calling Road Assist they told me to lock and unlock the car and try again. It worked. Apparantly it resets the computer - but still not good enough for a car like this. Second time the car was parked on a decline and wouldnt go into reverse. I locked and unlocked it and it engaged gear.
Audi are aware of this. After poor customer service from the dealership that delivered the car, I decided to call several other Audi service area's and some independant mechanics. Im told the issue is that the car goes into neutral after the brake is held for a certain period. Way around it is to use the handbrake (hillstart style) - oh joy! I cant drive a manual let alone know how to do a hill start. I have no idea what Audi were thinking designing an auto transmission to work that way. One mechanic told me it has also cause a few crashes from drivers jolting forward and backward trying to get the car to accelerate or reverse.
This is the first Audi I have owned. The transmission problem coupled with the extremely poor customer service I have received really make me wonder why I chose Audi. Its not an experience I wish to repeat.

Hey Brad. Guessing your A3 may not be covered by warranty? I would get a few quotes as Ive been told different stories by different dealers. Im in Oz too. I think its a computer prob with my car. It still stalls on inclines/declines when it feels like it, even though they have reset it. Audi tell me its the way the car was designed (Im not convinced). Ive also noticed the seatbelt indicator has a mind of its own. Ive put it to the test, Ive driven without the seatbelt on and sometimes the light flashes with the 'dinging' sound and sometimes the light is hard on with no noise. Seems crazy that your being told to get a new gearbox when Im being told its how the car was designed.

We have had the same issues with our transmission. We have had it in three times and it wasn't until we search on the Internet to find that they were having known transmission issues. It is unknown as to why the dealership didn't inform us. Has anyone else had issues with the dealer not telling them about this problem? Could they really not have known?
