b3 auto gearbox reverse problem

hey guys i got myself a audi 80 1991 auto 2.0e ... everything seemes pretty good ... only thing im worried about is sometimes it wont select reverse gear .. usually after a drive longer than about 2 mins ... if it wont select i can give it a bit of a rev and it kind of ... jumps into reverse gear or ... today i parked on a hill ... and tried reverse and it didint select reverse til i started to coast back a few feet. the gearbox oil looks pretty good on the dipstick (even though ive brought 4l of auto oil to replace allready). but i was just wondering if there is a common auto gearbox problem with the selector or something :S ... im going to replace auto gearbox filter and change oil on the weekend so thats the next step but any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my 1st audi :P .. not just with the gearbox problem but just with general maintenance of the car cheers all!

Hey now...no need to be hasty. Sorry for the delayed response. It's automatic correct?? ok it sounds like the reverse syncro is on it's way out. The only thing I've seen people do is replace the transmission in this case. Hope that helps. It's probably cheaper to replace the transmission then have the gearbox rebuilt. Good luck!

Greg!

yeah apologies about hasty reply!!! .... have been asking on multiple forums and got no replys there ! ... cheers for help .... any other problems with the gearbox that can cause this ...... ive read a million posts about auto boxes and seen people saying things like "" it could be engine mounts!"" or "" check your auto oil pump!"" but nothing about just audi boxes hehe ... thinking il just bite the bullet and grab another box .... would anyone be able to give me some info about replacement boxes ... do i have to get a b3 box? or can i go get a box from a b4 and throw it in ""doubt it but thought id try my luck" most of the b4's seem to be 2.3 litres ... i could be wrong but any info would be heaps of help !! .. cheers again
