defrost not clearing windows 1993 90 CS

It's my daughters car we bought used a while back. She says there is always moisture on the windows. The A/C hasn't been working this summer and we're going to work on that in the spring but I was wondering if the A/C compressor is needed to defrost? I know many cars rely on that to remove the moisture from the air.

She has heard from someone that it might be the heater core leaking. She has had to bring her antifreeze level up to the mark on the reservoir every once and a while. I'm not sure if that's a good way to tell if you have a leak or not though. I'm sure that level goes up and down depending on how hot it's running right?

Any help is appreciated because I've seen the videos on how to change a heater core.... ain't happening!

Thanks,

Dave

You don't need the A/C working to defrost the windows, switching the A/C button on 'activates' the compressor, otherwise it just idles.

It sounds like you could have a leak in the heater matrix. You could try bypassing it for a while. If you disconnect the two water pipes going into the bulkhead from the engine bay and join them with some hose clamps and some 22mm copper pipe. This will completely cut out the heater matrix. If your anti-freeze level remains constant now then that is where your leak is coming from.

There are products available which can seal small leaks like 'radweld', you may have some joy with these but from my experience if the matrix is leaking it's a dash out and swap it job.

Hope this helps

Nick

Thanks Nick. I think we'll try the leak stop first.

Hi! Agreed with Nick on the A/C - no need for defrost during winter. Summer - yes, it dries air and helps to remove moisture.

My experience with sealing stuff is 100% bad - it didn't seal really, but killed the core completely blocking ways inside. Plus eventually all this blocked stuff came out and got the the engine head cooling lines. Leaking core may give noticeable antifreeze smell.

Did you check if air comes from the vent? Cold/hot? Any error in A/C related to flaps?
