When Audi ( unveils the next generation Q7 SUV, it may be sporting the industry’s first electric turbocharger.

Speaking with Drive on the sidelines of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Audi’s head of diesel-engine development, Ulrich Weiss, confirmed that an e-turbo will find its way into production. “I can confirm we are working on the development of the e-boost definitely,” said Weiss. “Be sure that Audi will bring it to the market. Maybe it will be not this year. But it will be very soon.”

The technology was first previewed in the RS5 TDI Concept, which used a 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo diesel engine along with an electric turbo to generate 385 hp and a ridiculous 553 lb-ft of torque between 1,250rpm and 2,000rpm. The technology is supposed to eliminate turbo lag thanks to the instant torque available through electrification. Audi also claimed that the car could deliver up to 47 mpg.

Weiss also discussed the plausibility of bringing a diesel-powered RS performance car to market. “The RS model is not currently decided, but this does not mean this will not come,” said Weiss. “The first response we got was looking good, and maybe we have such a market for this in the future.”
