The stock air suspension is a nice feature, but causes a lot of headaches (air bags leak, expensive bags and shocks).

The Arnott coil over stinks (too soft, too high, noisy).

The Arnott GenII springs are stiffer, the Arnott-Bilstein are ok, but under dampened when combined with the GenII.

The only sure thing is the Hotchkis.

On top of it, the spring rate of the air bags get SOFTER when the car is lowered (should be the opposite).

Bilstein is offering to re-valve the Arnott-Bilstein shocks (at $80 or so plus 2 way shipping).

I was thinking of sticking firmer shocks into the Arnott-Bilsteins (but the re-valving seems a better bet).

One way of making the air springs firmer (at least in theory) would be to reduce the air volume inside the spring (fill with really heavy, high viscosity fluid comes to mind).

The other way: connect the top and bottom of the suspension with strong rubber ropes. at 4000 lbs weight, each spring is loaded with 1000 lbs. So finding a rope that can handle the elongation and produces say 250lb of force would pre load the spring by 25%, i.e. 25% higher spring rate.

A mechanical solution would also work nice, but haven't figured out how it could be done. Would be nice to install a progressive 'helper' spring that only loads up when at leavel 1 ride hight (for example).

On the other hand: there should be GOOD (vs. Arnott) fully adjustable (height, spring rate, dampening) solutions out there. My Passat sits low AND rides great on (quite inexpansive) Koni Yellow.

My friend finally was able to plant his 300Z with the installation of coil overs. BIG difference.

Does anyone know what suspension the RS6 Avant is using (unfortunately, we didn't get it here)?

Are the upper and lower control arms of the Allroad air systems 'suitable' for coil over installation?
How do they compare with A6 sedan and A6 Avant?

yeah, the coil over swap is a no sweat option.
a) most I have seen actually sit a stock level 2 or even higher!
b) how is the ride (empty, fully loaded, towing)

I may be willing to trade the ability to put 200 lbs on the tongue of my tailer hitch (while still having a great ride quality), and even the ability to raise the car to get through the foot of fresh snow we have around for 3 days (our sub gets plowed when the ice caps starting to melt) IF the coil over gets me GREAT (much better than my air bags) handling at decent ride quality and 25-35mm drop.

The Arnott coil overs certainly DON'T.

But I have to admit I haven't looked for coil over sets for the A6 or S6!

Well this is a long DIY and it does offer a drop. I think in the DIY it says he is at the highest setting and it's about level 2.
At least that's what it looks like in his pictures.
There is company called 2 Bennett that does offer a coil over option that's a bit more pricey but they will build the coil over to your spec. Whether you want soft and floaty or hard and eats up corners.
Basically it's all what you want.
For these guys you can adjust to about level 1.5 to about level 3

Oh and the upper control arms are the same for the B5 and C5 Audi's.
A6 (regardless of body style) all use the same upper control arms.
The lower control arms are allroad specific.
