I have an '04 Allroad 2.7 with just about 67K miles on it. Last year i had to replace the front airshocks at a pretty steep price, even for after market parts. Just this week, I had lots of trouble with the car and have been told that I have lost 1st gear and will need a new transmission, i was quoted $4200 for the part and about $1K for the labor. OUCH!!!! does this seem in line with what that estimate should be to you experts out there? i am hesitant to put that kind of money into the car, but I also need it safe for my wife and kids to get around.

suggestions please?

It would be better if you replace the transmission for safety concerns. To save on the labor cost, you can opt for DIY if you're familiar with it. If not then leave it to mechanic. But I would definitely suggest you to replace the transmission. Search for aftermarket audi transmission if available. But make sure you choose correct quality.
