Bought my 2004 A8L a few months ago and having a few issues.

The tire pressure monitor worked OK when we first got the car. It then started having intermitent problems when starting the car on cold mornings (slightly below freezing). At all times either all tires show up and work, or none show up. Now the system almost never works...

I am wondering if maybe the reciver got caked up with dirt/mud or some other common problem? It seems that after I wash the car, or after heavy rain the system works better... Strange?

If they are original sending units, I am surprised they work at all, the batteries go bad and the units need to be replaced (inside the tires - I bought mine from tire rack)
Fortunately the D3 allows you to turn off the TPMS in the MMI control unit so it wont nag you on the screen.

Check the battery charge level. It would be better to replace the TPMS sensor for better results. These sensors do fail to respond with time.

The problem is that either all 5 tires work, or all dont work, which makes me think that the problem is with the car-side reciver someplace. If a battery in one of the tires is dead, that wouldnt make them all go bad, right?

And who is the drunk German who thought of putting a battery inside of a tire??? They really couldnt make something that either gets power from centrifical force or has some alternate way to function? That's just plain stupid!

The best way to identify a bad sensor is to first re-program the sensors using a scan tool from the Audi dealer or specialist. I think this will be the best way to save money and find out that the sensors are bad.

The 5 pressure sensors are sealed units. Each has a lithium battery (same as watches). Life is about 7 years, Then entire unit needs replacement. Best site to buy direct from Taiwan via eBay for about $50 each.

Is it possible to determine if only one needs replaced at this time? Or will Audi have to charge you to find out? Can a DIY find out what sensor is bad?

It is not economical to replace only one sensor. They all have batteries with limited life, 5-7 years. When one battery dies, the rest are not far behind. The labor charge is essentially for balancing the tires. It is least expensive if all are done together at a tire store, e.g., Mavis, which have experience with sensor replacement.
