: Audi Key Fob Nightmare, The AA to the rescue

While in a rush the other day, I accidentally threw my last set of car keys away for my Audi A3.… Oppss does not cover it.

After spending hours trawling around on the Internet to see if I could gather some advice/information on ways to get a new set of keys, I tried a number of local Auto Locksmith firms near to me (Cardiff), only to find out that they do not have the specialist equipment required to drag the codes etc from the Audi onboard computer.

Reluctantly I phoned the Audi Main Dealer in Cardiff who informed me that it would take 10 to 15 days for a new key to me made and dispatched from Audi UK at a cost of £250, I would also have to get the car moved to the dealership for reprogramming when the key eventually arrived, which would cost me an additional £150. Not to mention all the taxis getting me to the dealership just to prove my ownership of the car before they order the new key.

As I am a member of the AA I thought I would phone them to see if they could move the car to the dealer under my membership, once I had told the AA about my stupid incident they informed me about their ‘Key Assist’ service which has only been running for the last year. They will come out to me, and sort me out with a new set of keys on the spot. WINNER!!!!!

Today my 4th Emergency Service arrived, 24 hours after making the initial call. 45 Minutes and £180 later I had two new keys for my car, one is an official Audi remote key fob and the other is a manual key fob. It’s still a pricy experience but compared to the Audi Dealership option it’s a steal, and I get two keys for less than my quote from Audi for one key. More importantly it only took 24 hours to sort out rather than 10 – 15 days with Audi.

The AA Key Assist is not listed on the Internet yet as its in a trial phase, you do not need to be a member to use the service so if you find yourself in the same situation as me, its worth giving them a shout.
