: Three error lights on dash

Very intermittently, until last week, I got three lights on the dash - ride height, ABS and ESP. After 5 seconds ABS and ESP go out. After that ride height can be altered, ESP cannot be disabled.

I get the following error codes from VAG-COM
03 ABS module
18265 - Load Signal: Error Message from ECU
34 Level Control
01772 - Signal from Level Control Pressure Sensor (G291)
27-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
01316 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs
79-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent
01400 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs
11-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent

In the last week (since the thermostat was replaced, requiring removal of cam belt etc) the lights come on several times a mile. On one occasion they appeared every ten seconds while the car was stationary.

There appears to be no physical trigger - not braking, cornering, hitting bumps, altering ride height etc.
While the ESP and ABS lights are on the car refuses to accelerate, in any gear, any revs. This could be dangerous if it occurred while I was overtaking.

It does seem to occur less often with the ride height on setting 2 rather than 1 (low).

Can anyone pinpoint what I might want to work on to find the cause?

I've found out a bit more.

The ride height error means it has lost communication with the ABS/ESP module, so the fault is there.

The ABS/ESP module is reporting
18265 - Load Signal: Error Message from ECU
P1857 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Assuming the ECu is module 1-engine, that reports
00550 - Start of Injection Regulation
08-10 - Control Limit Surpassed - Intermittent

So does this mean the problem originates with the engine, or is it more likely to be something like wheel speed sensors?

I wonder whether there is any connection with the thermostat replacement - what is around that part of the engine and might have been disturbed?

The ABS/ESP module looks as though it is the Bosch type 57 - it identifies as
Address 03: ABS Brakes
Controller: 4Z7 907 389
Component: ABS/ESP allrad D57
Coding: 06355
Shop #: WSC 02325

ELSA has very little information on that unit.

I've taken the laptop for a test drive, and found out two things:

The problem doesn't seem to show up until the engine reaches normal temperature

The problem always occurs when the ECU reports the following:

00550 - Start of Injection Regulation
08-00 - Control Limit Surpassed

This seems to be the reason why the ABS module reports, at the same time
18265 - Load Signal: Error Message from ECU
P1857 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

This in turn seems to be the trigger for the ride height module to report
01316 - ABS Control Module
79-00 - Please Check Fault Codes

Which leaves the question - what does the first error mean?
It is interesting that this set of errors was highly intermittent - once every few months - and since the thermostat was changed, requiring cam belt removal, which in turn requires the injection timing to be adjusted, the problem is now frequent - several times within a mile of driving.

Incidentally the first time I saw the errors on my test drive, I stopped, without turning off the engine, and tried to read the error codes. ABS and level control responded, but the engine refused to talk until I had switched off and back on. This did not repeat on subsequent tests.
