I recently purchased a 1999 Passat 1.8t for my wife. This vehicle has 17,000 original miles and is in primo shape. Being new to water cooled VWs I was looking for some advice on maintenance. I have read about the plastic water pump impellers that disentigrate but am not sure if I should replace now or wait a few thousand more miles. What about timing belts? Any other parts that are destined to cause me problems. I would just assume replace them in my timeframe rather that get surprised. Thanks.

Hi,
I am used to high mileage like 17,000 per year, but I expect the timing belts are time expired (I think they recommend 6yrs) but I am not a petrol expert. Brake fluid should also be changed routinely. I have heard of plastic thermostat housings on the Polo expiring at about 10 yrs so maybe check with your Spares department and see if they sell a lot. (The failure causes the Thermostat to jam shut)
I would change the Antifreeze when the belts are changed and inspect the top water hoses. The MOT people should pick up any perished brake hoses
I found my 1999 plastic headlights had suffered badly from UV exposure, so compare yours with other cars. They were about 110 each from the motor factors or a lot more from VW; and in spite of the MOT testers comments they really HAD to be renewed. Remember your tires are 10 years old and the rubber will have lost some of its resilience so be careful in the wet. Good luck = Supersparks +
p.s. If you are new to turbo's, they run red hot at high power so to let them cool at idle or low power for couple of minutes after hard running before shutting down to avoid damage to the oil seals and cooking the oil.
