Unhappy 2001 Audi TT Q dead 1st and 2nd gear

Greetings. I registered for the site because I've got a problem with the transmission on my 2001 Audi TT Quattro 6 speed. The local mechanic doesn't know how to fix it so I'm trying to find an alternative to replacing the whole transmission.

1st and 2nd gear are dead meaning that these positions behave like the transmission is in neutral. The mechanic checked the shifter cables and the problem is in the transmission somewhere, he just doesn't feel specialized enough to take it apart.

Can anyone recommend a mechanic within range (maybe 100 miles) of Athens, GA who might be able to repair/rebuild the six speed transmission on my car?

Hi, I'm a new member here and don't even own a TT yet (I'm looking) but I did see a Wheeler Dealer episode that addressed the issue of failed 1st and 2nd in a 6 speed Quattro TT.
Go online and look for Season 11 Episode 10. Ed China (the shows mechanic) figures out how to fix the problem cheap. He did have to drop the transmission and open it up, but not tear it down. The problem is a failed rivet that holds a selector fork.
If you're lucky like the car in the show, the part has only fallen to the bottom of the gearbox and not damaged anything. Ed was able to fix the problem with a new bolt.

While you will have to still find a good shop near you, show them this episode and maybe save some big bucks.
In the mean time don't drive the car! Good luck!

Awesome, thanks!

I couldn't find the entire episode, more the segment from it showing the fix, but I did find this video that someone else made:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mxHrndKx-zc

I've sent this to the mechanic to see if he thinks he can do it.
