Jetta problems help please

In every gear my car wont proceed past around 5500 rpms. Its a 99 vr6 5 speed trans. Over 100,000 miles just changed the trans fluid today, the check engine light turned on around when it started to happen, it seems like it has a rev limiter but when i first got the car it never did it. Any suggestions and if so how would i also go about taking the check engine light off.

See if you can hook-up a hand held OBD-2 computer to it and pull codes that might find your problem.
