Default 80 1.9TDi air intake mod

Hi I am looking at fitting a cone air filter onto an Audi 80 1.9tdi but when i was going to start fitting it and started messing about I thought a bit further and realised there was an air flow meter. If I unplug the air flow meter the car appears to go into limp mode or the turbo does not work? Is there any way the air flow meter can be overriden or connected onto itself with a variable resistor? Or do you need an adapter to go from the induction pipe to the air flow meter? The plug onto the air flow meter has 4/5 pins in it not just 2 unfortunately.
Does anyone have any advice or has been here before, any info would be useful.
Cheers
